Pigmentation is a result of the synthesis and distribution of melanic pigments in the skin, hair follicles and eyes. Melanins are produced by melanocytes. Melanin is produced from an amino acid, tyrosine, which is activated by the tyrosinase enzyme. Tyrosine –is an amino acid, Tyrosinase- is an enzyme. Tyrosine is like the mother. Tyrosinase is like the father. They get together and produce a baby called melanin.
There are two categories of Hyper-pigmentation: passive and inflammatory.
Passive hyper pigmentation is normally caused by internal chemical imbalances:
· Hormonal imbalances
· Drug reaction (the contraceptive pill, taking antibiotics e.g. tetracycline, roaccutane and the use of amphetamines.)
· Pregnancy (pregnancy mask)
· Menopause
Passive hyper pigmentation is more difficult to treat then inflammatory.
Inflammatory hyper-pigmentation is an outside such as:
· Sun damage
· Ddirect injury caused by lacerations, picking or burning
· Perfume allergies.
This is more superficial as cause can be isolated making it much easier to treat permanently.
DEPIGMENTATION: NEW DISCOVERIES!!!
Until now, the only cosmetic means of fighting hyperpigmentation was to slow down melanogenesis by
inhibiting tyrosinase and lightening the skin surface with various whitening agents (Vitamin C, AHA etc.).
Our Research Laboratories have discovered a totally innovative, new way of working in advance of the melanogenesis process, by acting on the DNA genes contained in the melanocytes nucleus.
A new active ingredient, O.D.A.white®, has been designed to modulate the “information carried by
the genes” to prevent the formation of melanin. We have selected this new ingredient as the “master” ingredient in our new lightening treatment.
The another innovative active ingredient, LUMISKIN®, in our cosmetic formulas, is designed to slow down melanogenesis process and therefore slow down pigmentation.
REGULATING GENETIC PIGMENTATION- IN VITRO TEST
An in vivo trial was performed against a whitening agent on the market, Arbutin, in order to assess and quantify the lightening properties of O.D.A.white®.

Arbutin (bearberry extract) is known for its depigmenting properties via inhibition of tyrosinase.

The trial was carried out on 21 Asian volunteers, aged between 27 and 50, using 2 formulas:
• 1% O.D.A.white®
• 2% Arbutin
• Twice daily application for 8 weeks on the forearm.

RESULTS
• 90% of volunteers observed a lightening effect after application of O.D.A.white®, up to 11%.
• For 76% of the volunteers, the quantity of melanin after application of O.D.A.white® was reduced down to 21.2%.

BRIGHTENING OF THE COMPLEXION- IN VIVO tests
A clinical trial on an Asian panel of 20 volunteers enabled us to establish the corrective effect of pigmentation and lightening of the complexion after twice-daily application of an emulsion containing 4% LUMISKIN®, for 56 days, by comparison to an untreated control area of the face.

When questioned at the end of the test, the volunteers acknowledged:
• Lightening of their complexion for 71%
• Brighter skin for 75%
• A more uniform complexion for 65%.
